The DAAD Prize honors outstanding international students who have distinguished themselves through exceptional academic achievements and remarkable social or intercultural engagement. In 2024, the DAAD Prize was awarded to Karim Taha from Egypt. Since October 2022, Karim has been studying Electrical Engineering - Control and Rail Automation Technology in a dual bachelor's program at bbw Hochschule - University of Applied Sciences. The selection committee was impressed not only by his excellent academic performance but also by his social commitment at the Volunteer Center Hannover. As part of the "Training Mentors" project, Karim Taha volunteers to mentor and support students in their transition from school to work. As a training mentor, he accompanies the young people over an extended period, helps with tutoring sessions, secures internships and apprenticeship placements, and assists them in preparing application documents.

In the following interview, the awardee Karim Taha talks about his journey to bbw Hochschule, his motivation to help others, and his plans for the future:

How does it feel to be honored with the DAAD Prize?
Karim: It is a great honor for me to be awarded the DAAD Prize 2024. This recognition is a significant motivation for me to continue striving for academic excellence and to make a valuable contribution through my commitment.

Why did you choose to study at bbw Hochschule, specifically the dual program in Electrical Engineering - Control and Rail Automation Technology?
Karim: My passion for technology and engineering, along with my desire for a hands-on education, led me to pursue a dual degree program at bbw Hochschule.

You have taken on social responsibility in your life. What motivated you, and what does social responsibility mean to you personally?
Karim: For me, social responsibility means taking the needs and challenges of others seriously and actively contributing to improvement. My motivation primarily comes from the belief that every person can make a big impact through small actions. I have learned early on how important support and empathy are-especially in working with people who need special assistance. Social responsibility means not only focusing on one's own well-being but also giving back to society and driving positive change.

What are your plans after graduation?
Karim: After graduation, I plan to gain work experience and apply my knowledge in practice. After a few years, I would like to pursue a master's degree to further deepen my expertise and open up new career opportunities.

Which course of study is best for me?
