Au revoir Berlin - after four weeks as a guest student at the bbw Hochschule

IRUP-Projekt 2023

With certificates, 5 ECTS credits, but also with goodbye pizza and photos in front of our university buddy bear, we said goodbye to nine French Master's students from IRUP la Grande École De L'Alternance from Saint-Étienne, who completed a guest study programme at the bbw Hochschule - University of Applied Sciencesfrom 3rd - 28th July 2023. They were the first international guest study group at the new university location in the Berlin-Adlershof Technology Park and more are to follow. For this, as in this case, a special study programme is put together that is primarily oriented towards the study programmes of the guests from the country of origin. A university cooperation was agreed for the guest stay of the group from St. Étienne. The aim was both academic and intercultural exchange between the students of the French partner university and our host university. Therefore, as desired, the study time was packed with business lectures from the English-language study programme of the bbw Hochschule - University of Applied Sciences from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on most days, additional project works with matching practice-oriented application tasks and excursions to companies. Finally, each member of the group had to pass an examination and defend their project work in order to receive 5 ECTS points on the final certificate. Because they presented convincing performances throughout, everyone in the group was able to receive congratulations from the Chancellor, Ursula Schwill, and the academic director of the Institute for Academic Continuing Education, Prof. Irina Slot, during the farewell round.

Overall, a lot of relevant knowledge was obviously imparted during the four weeks, which enriched the guests' studies at home and their professional practice, which they had not yet completed. All guest students rated this on a scale of four with the two best values. And they found the programme intensive. The topics such as change management, innovation management, infrastructure and technology development or economic policy were prepared in a demanding but student-friendly way. This was ensured by our professors, academic staff such as Juan Ocampo, who accompanied the Project Works as a start-up advisor of the PUSH Start-up Centre, as well as experts from the business world, such as Dr. Ali Hotait, who took on negotiation or HR topics. In any case, the programme gave the guest students with us ample opportunities to learn in exchange formats. It primarily relied on relatively small study groups - often alongside other (international) students from the bbw University of Applied Sciences - with teaching staff always on site. Courses were also exciting because they were methodologically diverse, e.g. between Innovation Talk or a field study at the EUREF campus in Berlin, Design Thinking training or a specialist conference on the topic of "Opportunities in Innovation - Liberal Pathways for Tomorrow's Leaders". Intercultural and professional communication was realised in all forms of study and on many occasions, even during breaks or at a joint meal with the international students.

The company visits, e.g. the dan pearlman Group, Refugio Stadtmission or Tatort Zukunft e.V., fitted perfectly into the concept. Here, the focus was on direct contact and exchange with managers and employees - with very different visions, but a clear idea of what needs to be learned and done so that a company can develop its own profile and reconcile values, responsibility and economic and social goals under current conditions in its field. At Seniovo gGmbH, the group had the opportunity to meet one of our graduates, the founder and managing director, Jonathan Kohl.He was also able to explain very clearly what a business idea needs to turn a start-up into an established company that functions economically and yet also produces socially relevant results. Finally, the students learned how to effectively implement innovations and sustainability in the food industry on a large scale at HelloFresh SE. Here, as COO, are Prof. Tilman Eichstädt, one of our former logistics professors, and now also at least one graduate of our ITTM (International Technology Transfer Management) degree programme. They showed the students which strategies and concrete measures the Berlin-based company uses to support climate-friendly food production worldwide and to bring healthy food to the consumer as resource-efficiently as possible according to recipe in cooking boxes.

Culture and history were of course also part of the programme. For example, our guest students visited the Jewish Museum, the Liebermann Museum and the building where the Wannsee Conference took place, visited the Reichstag building where the German Bundestag meets and went on the querstadtein tour in Kreuzberg to learn more about how refugees organise their lives in the city.

When there was still time to discover Berlin in the evenings and at the weekend, tips were in demand. And sometimes also company. For example, to clubs and bars. All in all, our guests must have enjoyed their study stay in Berlin - eight out of nine would "definitely" recommend the guest study. One or one voted "rather yes". This is a wonderful result that the organisation team is very pleased about.
