International general Erasmus+ Programme

Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. Erasmus+ brings together the previous EU programmes for lifelong learning, youth and sport as well as the European university cooperation programmes. The programme contains three key actions:

  • Key action 1 - Mobility of individuals
  • Key action 2 - Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices
  • Key action 3 - Support for policy reform

Erasmus+ has a budget of around 14.8 billion Euro at its disposal and more than four million people will benefit from this EU funding by 2020. The programme is spread across seven years and aims to improve skills and prospects, modernise the general and professional training systems and advance child and youth welfare. Information on Erasmus+ can be found on the European Commission website:

http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/index_en.htm

The funding is primarily used to strengthen mobility in Europe and, since 2015, to a small extent in other countries around the world. Around two million students are set to benefit from Erasmus+ by 2020, and over a quarter of a million from Germany alone. Included in this are all students at all levels up to and including PhD, who wish to complete part of their studies or a work placement abroad. Students may first receive funding for up to 12 months during their bachelor, master or doctorate degree. In order to increase the financial appeal of staying abroad, students also receive an increased monthly mobility grant, particularly for receiving countries with high living costs. Work placements abroad will in future be available after completion of the degree. Erasmus+ offers those students who wish to complete a master’s degree in Europe the opportunity to take on a low-interest rate loan. The Erasmus Mundus excellence funding, which supports high-achieving students for the entirety of their studies on selected European master programmes, is to be continued under Erasmus+.

Erasmus+ also contributes to the further internationalisation of universities with funding for short-term lectureships and further training stays for teaching and administration staff. Furthermore, universities may invite company staff from abroad to teaching events and thus take part in multilateral strategic partnerships with other European partners (also from non-academic fields) and together develop innovative projects (e.g. in the area of curriculum development or on educational topics from all areas). With regards to cooperation with the economy, Erasmus+ offers funding within the context of the new 'knowledge alliances'. Universities that would like to engage in the area of capacity development in third countries may do this as part of the international university partnership of the programme.

Funding for the majority of mobility measures and strategic partnerships is allocated to the 33 countries in the programme (27 EU countries, Great Britain, Iceland, Liechtenstein, FYR Macedonia, Norway, Turkey) by the National Agencies. In Germany, this task is performed by the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) (German Academic Exchange Service) as before.

Erasmus+ Policy Statement

The EU education programme Erasmus+ (2021 - 2027) will replace the previous Erasmus+ programme (2014 - 2020) in 2021. The prerequisite for the university's participation in the Erasmus programme is a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) awarded by the EU Commission and a commitment to an Erasmus Policy Statement on higher education policy.

Mobility measures

The following mobility measures are funded under the umbrella of the EU educational programme Erasmus+:

  • Study abroad for students (SMS)
  • Work abroad for Students (SMP)
  • Teacher mobility (STA)
  • Staff mobility (STT)

Erasmus+ innovations since the project year 2014

  • Students can receive funding several times at every study level (bachelor, master, doctorate).
  • Funding may be received for 12 months per level.
  • In some courses of study (state examinations, ‘Diplom’ etc.), students may receive funding for 24 months.
  • Work placements may be funded for two months (previously three months) during and following completion of the course of study.
  • Trainee teaching posts (Lehramtassistenzen) are funded as work placements. • Students who wish to complete their entire master course abroad in Europe may do so with a low-interest rate bank loan.

ERASMUS CHARTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION (ECHE)

Every higher education institute which takes part in and/or which applies for the EU programme for general and professional education, youth and sport 2021-2027 (hereinafter 'the programme') must provide a valid Erasmus charter for higher education (ECHE). The ECHE are allocated by the European Commission. It demonstrates that the university meets all the requirements for successful participation in the Erasmus+ programme. The bbw Hochschule - University received the Erasmus charter for the programme period 2014-2020 and 2021-2027.
