Gambia Project at bbw University of Applied Sciences Inspires Sustainable Solutions

2024-03-05

As part of the educational project "Subject Didactics for Metal Technology and Mechatronics," a training session was held in the Gambian city of Serekunda (West Africa) from January 29 to February 7, 2024, under the leadership of Daniel Meyer, lecturer at bbw University of Applied Sciences.

The goal of this collaborative project with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is to strengthen the technical skills and awareness of local participants regarding sustainable solutions in metalworking, and to impart both theoretical and, most importantly, practical knowledge in the field of metal technology.

The focus of the educational initiative was the construction of a solar-powered fruit and vegetable dryer to make food more durable. While manufacturing a bottle opener, the 13 participants learned basic metalworking techniques and broadened their awareness of sustainable energy use and the utilization of natural resources.

Daniel Meyer emphasized that the commitment and enthusiasm of the participants for sustainable solutions was particularly encouraging, highlighting the importance of such initiatives for the future of this small West African country, which has a population of 2.4 million. The lecturer emphasized that this training project in Gambia had been very successful.
