The DAAD Award Winner of the bbw Hochschule - University of Applied Sciences 2022

DAAD-Preisträger 2022

This year, the DAAD Prize went to Omar Akhalil from Syria. Since October 2020, Omar has been studying at the bbw University of Applied Sciences in the dual Bachelor's programme Electrical Engineering - Control and Rail Automation Technology. He convinced the selection committee not only with his excellent academic achievements, but also with his years of commitment to the German Red Cross in Hamburg, where he has been assisting with first-aid services at events and in civil protection since 2019. In the following interview the award winner Omar Alkhalil talks about his way to the bbw Hochschule - University of Applied Sciences, his motivation to help others and his plans for the future.

How does it feel to receive the DAAD Prize 2022?
It is an honour for me to be awarded the DAAD Prize for the Year 2022. At this point, I say thank you very much! It is an encouraging motivation to continue both to do my best and to follow the academic path.

Why did you choose the bbw Hochschule - University of Applied Sciences in general, why dual study programme Electrical Engineering - Control and Rail Automation Technology in specific?
My former degree, which I did not complete, was in electrical engineering. That's why I wanted to pursue my goal. The dual study programme allows me to put the skills I acquired at university into practice. I was offered block courses at the BBW University, which allowed me to get to know Berlin and the surrounding area better.

You have taken social responsibility in your life. What was your motivation, and what does social responsibility mean to you?
The motto "No matter what you can do, you can help" is a main reason to work as a volunteer. Furthermore, I want to give a part of the help I receive back to society, which is very important to me personally. Because this creates a better world.

What are your plans after graduation?
The first goal after graduation is to deepen my practical experience and obtain a Master's degree.

We warmly congratulate the well-deserved award winner!
