On August 24th, the Toxic Lunch took place at University of Applied Sciences, a format in which Professor Buller interviews executives during lunchtime on specific topics. The focus of this event was on two theses: "Volunteering as Lived Democracy - an Invaluable Asset in Private and Societal Crises" and "Honoring Others and Oneself - Time, Effort, and Passion for Belonging, Purpose, and Appreciation." As a guest, Ms. Antje Trölsch, Managing Director of the Berliner Tafel (Berlin Food Bank), was invited. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Berliner Tafel collects food daily from vendors, distributed by volunteers. This occurs through distribution points or direct deliveries to social institutions. In this context, volunteer engagement represents an immediate form of participation and civil action, characterized by voluntarism and selflessness. Volunteer work is meaningful, contributing to aiding the needy and strengthening democratic society. Opportunities for engagement with the Berliner Tafel encompass various tasks, such as food delivery. Teams, comprised of several individuals, take on roles like navigating routes, loading and unloading food, as well as sorting and inspecting products. Moreover, volunteers can assist in packing bags. Regarding startups dedicated to food rescue, questions arise about their impact on the Berliner Tafel. Some startups pursue commercial interests, seeking economic gain through food rescue. Antje Trölsch explains that many of these startups collect food before the Berliner Tafel can intervene. On the 7th of November, the next edition of the Toxic Lunch with Professor Buller invites you, with Professor Udo Steinbach as the guest this time.
