Studying - Internships - Job - Career: First Cross-industry Recruiting Career Day at bbw University of Applied Sciences

02.07.2015

The bbw University of Applied Sciences held its first ever cross-industry Recruiting Career Day on 25 June 2015, which received an unexpectedly big response. This was the beginning of a new series of events which are intended to give companies in the region the opportunity to directly recruit specialists and managers, while also making it easier for students and graduates to get off to a good start in their career.

Business meets students: A Recruiting Career Day is a great opportunity for companies looking for interns, junior staff and talent for leadership positions as well as for students looking for exciting internships or even a suitable traineeship for their professional career. Both sides can make initial contacts easily and directly. This was the goal of the first interdisciplinary Recruiting Career Day at the bbw University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. With 23 well-known companies taking part and more than 250 students and graduates attending, on 25 June 2015 the bbw University of Applied Sciences Career Servicewas able to put on an impressive opener to the planned series of events. The 100% positive response from all the participating companies partners plus the surprisingly high interest among the students means that at least one event of this kind will be held annually, with an even wider range of businesses.

The bbw University of Applied Sciences opened a new series of events on 25 June 2015 with its first interdisciplinary Recruiting Career Day that met with an unexpectedly strong response. As the business school for business in Berlin and Brandenburg, The University of Applied Sciences intends to offer direct access to specialist and managerial staff, especially for its corporate partners, but also to any interested companies in the region. At the same time, it should make it easier for students and graduates of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs to enter their chosen profession. “The launch event certainly succeeded in achieving its objectives. The positive feedback from the HR managers and CEOs that were here shows us that in principle the event format meets our objectives. We are planning an event next year at even larger scale", said Jürgen Weiß, Chancellor of the bbw University of Applied Sciences. “The company representatives brought with them many real job offers both at home and abroad. Despite the fact that it was very busy at times, it was easy to see that some longer individual discussions were taking place on the company stands. There was interest in study-and-work programmes, internships, traineeships and some truly interesting executive positions, Of course, it was also good that important questions could be asked directly, covering such matters as salaries, working hours, career prospects . From now on, the companies are expecting to receive a lot of applications. Of course, we are pleased about that." Head of the Career Service at the bbw University of Applied Sciences, Nina Karth .

There were a number of well-known giants of the commercial world at this Recruiting Career Day, such as TUI Cruises, Lidl Deutschland, Axel Springer Verlag, Mister Spex, Flaconi Webparfümerie, Hotel Waldorf Astoria, Motel One, Maritim Hotels, Techniker Krankenkasse, Randstad (the largest recruitment agency in Germany), Enterprise rent-a-car, tour operators JT Touristik and Eberhardt Travel GmbH, conference and event organisers IQPC Gesellschaft für Management Konferenzen mbH, MCI Germany, vegan supermarket Veganz and the College Council offering internships, work and travel abroad. Major companies based in Berlin were also there such as Messe Berlin and its subsidiary, CSG Team GmbH as well as visit Berlin and young digital companies including the online shop Lesara, the internet rental platform erento and the marketing startup Sharingbox GmbH.

This time, the focus was on the presence of companies and their vacancies, mainly in less technical sectors. Next time, the plan is for companies with job and internship offers to be represented that are suited to all fields of study, including future industrial engineers and general engineers.

For Steffen Schulz, a student in the 6th semester of his course in economic science and with a specialisation in tourism and event management, the event was a real surprise. “I was never expecting that there would be so many big companies with very specific job offers." he said.

For Enterprise rent-a-car the students and graduates from almost all fields of study were of interest. “They should be ready to work in commerce and be very service oriented. It is also important to have an eye for the whole business." said Lamise Awad. “Then the job application can be sent in." The company has had close contacts with the bbw University of Applied Sciences for several years, and every year they offer a double-digit number of posts for interns and management trainees. Eighty percent of them get a job offer afterwards. The Head of Human Resources at Webparfümerie, Flaconi, Martin Köhler, had several discussions with students. The Flaconi goodybags were very popular, providing information on the operational areas for students and graduates, plus, no doubt, some fragrant content. Dirk Arndt, Personnel Officer at VisitBerlin, had a few marketing jobs available. But his main interest was to give trainees a chance of entering the tourism industry. Petra Leipold, Head of Human Resources at Messe Berlin GmbH, was looking optimistic after just half an hour. “If I am able to enthuse just two interested parties here today so that they take up an internship or a job, it is worth it." she said. Messe Berlin is also a long-standing company partner of the bbw University of Applied Sciences and provides a total of 60 - 80 places per year for compulsory internships. Recruiting Manager Laura Famira from TUI Cruises Hamburg came with no great expectations. “I was very positively surprised how many interested students were visited our stand in the short time available. The best of them also have a chance of getting a job. About one in three gets an offer or has good prospects following internal enquiries in-house." She had even brought along an intern, Nastassja Prill, a former student of the bbw University of Applied Sciences. Human Resources Manager Benjamin Böhmer was at the Recruiting Career Day at the bbw University of Applied Sciences on behalf of Mister Spex . He had brought with him ten offers for student trainees and interns, with another 40 positions that could be viewed on-line. His conclusion? “We have had a lot of interesting discussions and will definitely come back next time."
