Welcome Week for the international students

2022-04-13

Welcome Week Sommersemester 2022

The start of a course of study always means the start of a new phase in life, which brings many new and unfamiliar challenges. To ensure that all international new students arrive well at the bbw University of Applied Sciences, the International Office organised, as usual, a welcome programme for the start of this year's summer semester. Not only because of Corona cannot all students be in Berlin at the start of the semester, some are still waiting for their visa to be approved. In the past semesters, the digital implementation of the programme has proven itself, so that the information sessions, useful seminars and an event again took place primarily online in the summer semester. In addition to the regular enrolment event, which took place on a hybrid basis and could thus be followed live by internationals from all over the world, the International Office welcomed the students with a colourful welcome programme that filled an entire week.

The Welcome Week started with an introduction to the topic "Studying and Living in Berlin" - important information about studying and living in Berlin and a first opportunity to get to know each other and the International Office team. Furthermore, an interactive seminar to sensitise the international students to cultural peculiarities in Germany awaited them. Following the matriculation event on Wednesday, the focus was more specifically on studying: In an introductory event, the most important information about exams and Moodle, the learning portal of the bbw University of Applied Sciences, was presented. On Thursday, everything revolved around the topic of health insurance: the public health insurance companies AOK Gesundheitskasse Ost, BARMER and TK presented themselves and their services. After so much information, some people's heads were spinning. In a workshop on brain fitness, the students were able to recover and take away useful exercises for their everyday studies. The Welcome Week ended with a virtual live sightseeing tour of Berlin. While virtually visiting Berlin's main attractions, the guide also provided information about the special history of Berlin and Germany and gave insider tips worth knowing about life in Berlin.

The first introductory week was already a complete success. We will continue to hold the Welcome Week as a valuable contribution to welcoming our international students - even when they are on the other side of the world - despite the still exceptional situation.

We wish all students a good start to their studies!
