Digital Narration as an innovative didactic Attempt for Economic Education in Trade Research Project DiNöB

Partial project at the bbw University of Applied Sciences: Development of new teaching methods and their trial during advanced training for commercial business administrators and Bachelor's degree studies.

Project type:
BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research)
Specialist group:
Business Sciences
Term:
2015-01-01 to 2017-12-31

The project is a collaborative endeavour funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project is being coordinated by the Zentralstelle für Berufsbildung im Handel e.V. (zbb), a subsidiary of the German Retail Federation (HDE). The bbw University of Applied Sciences is a partner in the project. It has a duration of 3 years and has already been under way since January 2015.

DiNöB - Protagonist 1
Protagonisten der Geschichte

The goal of the cooperative project is to give students a comprehensible and tangible emotional access to economic topics. Complex correlations and their relevance to the lives of students are clarified with the help of digitalised stories (didactic narration) that relate to the actual worlds they work and live in. The goal of the partial project at the bbw University of Applied Sciences is to make economic topics more understandable by relating them to students through personal access. Emotional involvement is meant to expand their competency in economic thinking and trading in order to provide companies with commercially experienced personnel.

DiNöB - Protagonist 2
Protagonisten der Geschichte

The goals are achieved by (1) jointly determining the choice of business education topics. (2) Creating stories for the different levels of students, which are then (3) technically implemented in digital concepts. This is followed by (4) trial and evaluation.

The topical areas in which the bbw University of Applied Sciences creates stories are currently being determined. Three topical areas are involved: (1) What does economics have to do with me? (Level: first training year), (2) Why does somebody have such attractive prices (commercial price calculation)(Level; 2nd training year) and (3) Everybody shops online, don’t they? (Level: advanced further education/commercial business admistrator/ Bachelor’s course).

Comenius

The narrative structure and individual characters of the stories have been determined. The scene of all the stories is the Neukölln district of Berlin.

The area houses a flat-sharing community whose different young members undergo various stages of development during their 3 years together. Another fixed ingredient is the late-night shop on the ground floor. The tales take the form of short stories which are spoken by a narrator and accompanied by pictures. Every story consists of a certain number of episodes in which the students must undertake various tasks. The basic aim is to supply the lecturer with a pool of different tasks which can be flexibly introduced in appropriate situations.

The DiNöb project was awarded the Comenius Seal by the Gesellschaft für Pädagogik, Information und Medien e.V. (GPI) in 2017. The award is given to outstanding ICT-based educational media developed within Europe, and was shared with the partnering organizations viewable on the DiNöB project page.
