Mechanical Engineering with Solar and Wind Power Engineering

Engineers have glittering prospects on the job market. As demonstrated in a survey by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW) for the Association of German Engineers (VDI), one in four technology companies expects an increased demand for engineers in the next two years. Many even fear that there will be a shortage of new engineers. Renewable energy generated by wind and solar power are a future key market. By the year 2020, the number of people working in this sector will rise from the current 170,000 to 300,000. Wind energy has asserted its leadership on the world market, nowhere in the world are as many solar plants installed as in Germany. Germany also has the highest density of solar factories and institutes for solar technology research.

With the internationally recognized Bachelor of Engineering degree, the bbw University of Applied Sciences offers the opportunity to combine theoretic with practical knowledge and to qualify for challenging jobs within a short period of time. The future engineers will be optimally prepared for the latest demands of the energy industry. They will be qualified for a wide variety of positions in business and society to push the initiated energy transition forward. In only six semesters (full time) or eight semesters (part time), students can take the exam to qualify as a mechanical engineer. Businesses promote their young academic employees by sponsoring a part time course in the scope of human resources development.

The course concept was developed and evaluated in collaboration with the Verband der Metall- und Elektroindustrie in Berlin und Brandenburg (vme).

Through a joint initiative from the State of Berlin, Bildungswerk der Wirtschaft in Berlin und Brandenburg and the bbw University of Applied Sciences a sponsorship is available to employees of Berlin-based companies living in Berlin to pursue part-time studies in Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics.

From September 2009 to the beginning of winter semester 2010/2011, tuition fees can therefore be subsidized with funds from the European Social Fund and the state of Berlin.

- The sponsorships were provided on the basis of Commission Regulation (EC) No 800/2008 of 6 August 2008 declaring certain categories of aid compatible with the common market in application of Articles 87 and 88 of the Treaty (General block exemption Regulation); the Official Journal of the European Union L 214 from 9 August 2008, p 3) states:

Therefore, aid in favor of a beneficiary which is subject to an outstanding recovery order

following a previous Commission Decision declaring an aid illegal and incompatible with the common market, should be excluded from the scope of this Regulation. As a consequence, any ad hoc aid paid out to such a beneficiary and any aid scheme not containing a provision

explicitly excluding such beneficiaries remains subject to the notification requirements of Article 88(3) of the Treaty.

Generalist engineering knowledge and skills shall be taught in the core modules of the Basic Studies and Applied Studies, which are to be taken by all students on this course.

In the
Basic Studies, the students principally acquire basic engineering knowledge and shall be assisted in the acquisition of social and communication skills and the development and mastering of scientific work methods. Interdisciplinary modules (law, basic skills, student consulting and practice phases) complete the foundation course.

The objective behind strengthening the students' profiles through an early orientation on sector-based professional areas based on their preferences serves the industry-oriented specialization. This is anchored in the
Special Studies. Through the Special Studies, the students acquire fundamental knowledge of a specific branch. This gives them the opportunity to more selectively align their professional perspective to this sector.

The
Applied Studies develop, deepen, and contextualize engineering skills and abilities. This enables students to analyze complex business problems and to contribute solutions. The acquisition and application of management-oriented knowledge are also incorporated. This extends and strengthens skills that have been acquired in the course and partially exercised in practice.

Structure

Length of full time course:


3 years, i.e. 6 semesters or 1,800 hours
For full-time courses approx. 6 weeks holiday per year are incorporated.
Course hours: 8:30 am - 5:30 pm

Part time/extra-occupational course:


4 years, i.e. 8 semesters or 1,800 hours
The part-time program, for students also currently employed/in vocational training, takes place two evenings a week from 6:00 to 9:15 pm and on two Saturdays per month from 8:30 am to 3:45 pm.



Course begin:


The full-time course begins April 1 and October 1 of each year, while the part-time program begins March 1 and September 1.



In the first year of the program, the Basic Studies deliver a fundamental skill base as well as the basic principles of economics, law, and Business English. Here the focus is placed on orientation, theory of cognition, and personal development, in order that orientation and optimum study methods are quickly achieved.

The
Special Studies comprise of a special focus on the industry. In contrast to other courses available to date, the content of this course focuses more strongly on the occupational field and orientation on the industry. The specialized course is supplemented by subprojects, industry-related project work in companies and is concluded with a semester thesis.

The project-based
Applied Studies stay abreast of growing internationalization. The lectures are partly held in English and each concludes with case studies. The application-based curriculum is rounded off with current management themes, relating to international business and management as well as ethical issues. All exams are in accompaniment to the course and assessed in accordance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The Bachelor's program is concluded with a business-related Bachelor thesis, which should ideally follow up on the consulting work prepared during the Specialized course.

Requirements

  • A Level or higher education entrance qualification OR

  • Certificate as a master craftsman, state-certified technician, graduate in business management OR

  • a professional qualification suitable for the course and at least three years of professional experience

    International Students:

    International students need a C1 level in German language.

Full-time course:
36 installments of EUR 420.00 (EUR 15,120.00 total)

Part-time course:
48 installments of EUR 315.00 (EUR 15,120.00)
