Management of Creative Industries

Creative industries have become a relevant part of our economy. The digital shift is a major driver. Berlin is a booming hotspot in the sector. Almost on a weekly basis, international players start activities in the city. Founders of all nationalities set up countless startups here. The main reasons for the attractiveness of Berlin are the tolerant and open atmosphere, its internationality, but also hard factors such as relatively low costs of living and rent and a large pool of dedicated and highly qualified professionals. However, when the growth continues or even expands, the city will need a continuous feed of specialists. The impact on the educational system is yet unexplored. For the first time, a German university of applied science is starting a master program, dedicated to the management of the creative industries as a whole. This holistic approach has the advantage, that it enables proactive responses to the drastic changes within the industry. We look mainly onto the transversal subjects of different creative industries. It also can apply new emerging competences such as trans- sectorial intellectual property management, crowd funding and community based marketing. Management of creative industries follows an holistic approach. Management traditions and the crafts of the sectors are still relatively different. On the other side, transversal competences emerge, which are specific to more or less all sectors of the creative economy. Additionally, the sectorial break-up of the creative economy is shifting drastically - creative industries are increasingly characterized by a growing interdisciplinary dynamic. Disruptive innovations, the profession's specificities and constantly new inputs will enhance the challenge to keep the open, holistic approach without becoming pointless and superficial. Therefore, it is important to set up a very concrete "hands on” education so that we can keep our promise towards the students.

Length of full time course:

2 years, i.e. 4 semesters

The Master degree should enable to operate on a reasonably high level within all the sectors of the creative industry, as junior manager, consultant or as "midwife” of creative companies driven by the creative class, but with relatively little knowledge of management expertise. Therefore, the course should aim at hands-on knowledge rather than theories. The minimal cut set between the sectors should be the guideline of activity concerning methods and knowledge. Master of CIM is an exciting course, offering the opportunity to develop professional leadership and strategic business skills for the creative industries including design, fashion, games and digital media. But it is also the creation of a new discipline and participants will be asked to contribute actively in defining and building the ever changing elements. This master program aims at ambitious professionals from all disciplines, who share a common goal to build business value through entrepreneurship, strategic management and innovation in the creative industries. Target groups of potential students come from three areas. Firstly, we want to offer a Master's program for our BA students in the bbw programs relevant to the creative industries, such as "media management”, "fashion management” and "communication management”, but also "event management” and "tourism management”. Secondly, we are indenting to attract international students holding at least a BA, who want to come to work in the Creative Industry in Berlin. Finally, we are also interested in working with mid - career students with experience in one creative sector, who are interested to switch to another one (e.g. print, TV). The course is oriented in its final degree at a master of art in the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The Master`s program is concluded with a business-related master-thesis and a colloquium and gives access to the higher service. Requirements are an undergraduate degree and English Language Level B2 (TOEIC, TOEFL or IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent). We are intending to concentrate all physical sessions on Fridays and Saturdays, so that students can work Monday through Thursday in the inductry.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree from a course consisting of at least six semesters at a university or equivalent institution, a technical college in Germany or an equivalent college abroad. The final grade must be at least "satisfactory"
  • English Language Level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference)
